What is Meno- belly?

“Meno-belly” is the common term for the shift in fat distribution that occurs during perimenopause and menopause. Unlike weight gain in younger years, which often settles in the hips and thighs (subcutaneous fat), meno-belly specifically targets the midsection.

Hormones shift when estrogen levels drop, the body naturally changes how it stores energy. This fat often becomes “visceral“, meaning it stores deeper in the abdomen around internal organs, which can impact metabolic health.

Change in shape

You may notice your “waist-to-hip” ratio changing, even if the number on the scale stays the same.

Abdominal Protrusion

Fat becomes concentrated in the midsection, creating a rounded appearance in the belly area that often feels resistant to traditional exercise.

Understanding Meno-Belly: The Hormonal Shift in Your 40s and 50s

Triggered by the systemic decline in estrogen during perimenopause and menopause, “meno-belly” often results in a concentrated increase in abdominal fat that is resistant to traditional exercise. These changes can begin as early as the late 30s or early 40s as hormones fluctuate, with most women noticing the most significant metabolic shift between the ages of 45 and 55.
